Ukraine Partnership Bureau visited the seminar: Joint Implementation: creating successful climate change partnerships

Several British private sector companies visited Ukraine in late November 2008 in the framework of the first UK Climate Change Trade Mission - Joint Implementation: creating successful climate change partnerships.

A seminar was conducted on 18 November 2008 to encourage greater UK-Ukraine co-operation in Joint Implementation (JI) project finance, development and other associated services.
During the seminar government officials from Ukraine and the UK along with UK companies outlined the opportunities for JI projects in Ukraine, how carbon credits from JI projects could generate an additional income stream for the project and the practicalities of undertaking a JI project.
The UK companies represented at the seminar included project developers, investment fund managers, financial institutions, carbon brokers and auditors.
“The UK government believes climate change is one the greatest environmental challenges facing the world today. The UK might get warmer due to climate change, but we’d also be more vulnerable to events like floods – we had severe flooding last year that affected thousands of people. The Stern Report on the economics of climate change estimated that the cost of acting now to tackle climate change could be at least 5% of global GDP each year, but leaving action until later it could be more than 20% GDP annually. All this shows why we believe climate change is such a big challenge.”
Additional information:
Ukraine is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol. In accordance with the Kyoto protocol, Ukraine like other signatory countries has obligations as to the limiting its greenhouse gas emissions over the period 2008 to 2012 by an agreed amount against certain baseline.
Currently Ukraine lacks investments necessary for modernisation of its economy. Financial mechanisms provided by the Kyoto Protocol, such as JI, could serve as alternative source of investments, resulting in greenhouse gas emission that would not have otherwise occurred in the absence of the project as well as, with some projects, increasing energy efficiency. JI is implemented in accordance with national priorities and will bring about social, economic and environmental benefits for the local communities.
The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change, the most comprehensive review ever carried out on the economics of climate change, was published on October 30 2006 and was lead by Lord Stern, the then Head of the Government Economic Service and former World Bank Chief Economist.
Ukrainian Bureau of Partnership, participates in development and realization of two projects, related to the change of climate.
