Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv, Kharkiv to host Euro 2012 matches, Kyiv to stage final
The UEFA Executive Committee agreed at its session in Madeira, Portugal, on Friday, to allow four Ukrainian cities - Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv - to host matches of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.
The Euro 2012 final will take place in the Ukrainian capital, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.
"It was decided that four Ukrainian cities that were earlier designated - Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk - have been selected as cities that will host Euro 2012," she said.
Thus, Euro 2012 matches will take place in Kyiv, Donetsk, Lviv and Kharkiv in Ukraine, and in Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan and Wroclaw in Poland.
"For the sake of such victories, especially in a difficult crisis year, it was worth the whole country working day and night," Tymoshenko said.
"First and foremost, I want to thank President of the Ukrainian Football Federation Hryhoriy Surkis, who called for Euro 2012 to be held in Ukraine... I want to thank UEFA and its President Michel Platini for giving Ukraine such a chance, a national dream that, I'm sure, will create infrastructure for Ukraine for the next 50 years," she said.
Tymoshenko also thanked the team of the Ukrainian organizing committee and investors who made a significant contribution in the form of funds and organizing opportunities.
"The fact that the forces of the government, the football federation and its head, and certain investors who invested funds in our stadiums were united around this great project gave a chance to prepare Ukraine and receive today confirmation that four Ukrainian cities will host Euro 2012," she said.
Tymoshenko also congratulated the whole of Ukraine, especially football fans, and the "friends of our country" on this victory.
