Week in the Ukraine. 18-26 September

18 September 2009. Kyiv, Ukraine - United Nations Representative Office, Global Compact Network, UN Volunteers Programme in Ukraine in the partnership with civic, students’ organizations and private companies initiated Climate Week in the country (18-26 September).

Fighting climate change is one of the most important issue on the United Nations (UN) agenda. How the world deals with climate change today will have a direct bearing on the human development prospects of a large section of humanity. Failure will consign the poorest 40 percent of the world’s population - some 2.6 bn. people - to a future of diminished opportunity, according to the UN Human Development Report 2007/2008.

Climate change poses a real threat to the humankind. We can prevent catastrophic consequences for future generations by signing a new climate change agreement to control level of greenhouse gas emissions after the expiry of the current commitment period of Kyoto Protocol in 2012.

On December 7, 2009, world leaders of 192 UN Member States will gather in Copenhagen, Denmark, to respond to one of the greatest challenges facing humanity: climate change. Reaching an agreement on climate change by the end of the meeting (18 December) in Copenhagen will depend not only on political negotiations but also on public pressure from around the globe. To galvanize support globally towards this goal, for the first time UN initiated Global Climate Week which will be marked by synchronized activities in more than 100 cities, accounting Ukrainian.

A campaign that encourages users to sign an online, global petition, which Secretary-General will present to world leaders in Copenhagen, will be held in the frame of Ukrainian National Campaign “Go green”. The petition will serve as a reminder that world leaders must negotiate a fair, balanced and effective agreement in Copenhagen, and that they must seal a deal to power green growth, protect our planet and build a more sustainable, prosperous global economy that will benefit all nations and all people. The Petition can be find here: http://www.sealthedeal2009.org/.
