Green Day in European Business Association , Kiev, Ukraine 20 March 2009
Energy saving has always been a crucial issue for sustainable development and business success worldwide!
Therefore within the Green Week Forum 2009 in Ukraine, the European Business Association jointly with the Embassy of Belgium and Ukrainian Partnership Bureau organised the ‘Green Day’. This important event was hosted at the EBA Kyiv-based office on 20 March, 2009.
We are very grateful to the Belgian Embassy for their kind and great initiative to help us organise the ‘Green Day’ featuring key Belgian experts who specially visited the EBA to present their valuable views and ideas about energy saving issues.
The ‘Green Day’ event aimed to raise awareness of the EBA business community about legal, economic and organisation strategies on effective energy saving approaches, sustainable development and use of bio-energy and renewable energies. Also the attendees talked over effects of global warming and climate changes.
Among other things, the Belgian experts highlighted the following topics:
• Construction and commissioning of the Belgian ‘zero emission’ Antarctic research centre, Princess Elisabeth: a stimulating example of sustainable development.
• Industrial energy services as a tool to achieve energy savings and sustainable development.
• A role of utilities in sustainable development by using bio-mass and other renewable energies for power production.
• Government can play an active role in promoting energy efficiency and implementing the European SET plan (strategic energy technology plan) through incentives and follow-up steps.
• Sustainability assessment facilitates smooth transition from a traditional energy system to sustainable energy systems.

A number of Government officials from the Ministry of Regional Development and Construction, National Agency on Efficient Energy Use and Ministry of Residential and Municipal Services joined the EBA community for supporting an interesting discussion with the Belgian experts.
The list of the key Government officials included:
• Inga Voytsekhovska, Key Expert in Trans-Border Cooperation and International Markets, Ministry of Regional Development and Construction
• Oleksandr Hrytsyk, Head of International Legal Issues Department, National Agency on Efficient Energy Use
• Oleksandr Savenko, Head of Department, Ministry of Residential and Municipal Services of Ukraine
To top it off, Ruslana, Ukrainian pop singer, winner of Eurovision 2004, attended the meeting to introduce the attendees to her presentation titled ‘Wild Energy’.
Many EBA members and media men turned up at the ‘Green Day’ event. The EBA will continue to focus on all issues acquiring vital importance for businesses today thus making its contribution to development and enhancement of an investment climate in Ukraine!
